Mitsubishi has given its stylish crossover SUV a sophisticated facelift, with a dynamic shield front design that brings it in line with the rest of the brand’s SUV family – and if that’s not attractive enough, drivers can get in on the action for the special introductory price of $29,990 + ORC*.
Following hot on the heels of the new Outlander and seven-seat Pajero Sport, four updated ASX models will be an exciting addition to Mitsubishi’s new-look line-up, says head of sales and marketing strategy Daniel Cook.
“The new ASX exudes a street-smart attitude, delivering style and performance at exceptional value,” says Mr Cook. “It certainly looks the part and is packed with innovative technology for smarter, safer driving. As a compact and comfortable crossover, ASX broadens driver appeal across our range and we believe it will win over plenty of new fans.”
Available as a 2WD petrol or 4WD diesel, with XLS or VRX spec, 2017 ASX makes its biggest impact up front, where sophisticated gloss black and silver paintwork is offset with sleek chrome detailing on either side.
Standard 18” alloys add extra style; and for discerning owners for whom every detail matters, a sleek rear fin antennae replaces the standard aerial of previous models. There’s even a modern new key fob design.
In a car that looks this good, it’s good to be seen – daytime-running lights help ensure that being seen is a safe bet at any time of day.
Beauty’s not just skin deep
Inside, revised functionality and new graphics on the 6.1″ touch-screen audio system promote ease of use and an improved driver experience. Bluetooth pairing is prompted to ensure safe, hands-free phone use.
The dash screen also doubles as a reversing camera for extra assistance – both in spotting smaller members of the family and when backing into or out of tight spots. In fact, when it comes to parking, ASX makes grabbing a space around town a stress-free exercise, boasting the tightest turning circle (5.3m) in its class allied with smooth power steering.
Passengers will ride in comfort too, with redesigned rear seating featuring ergonomic concave shaping, increased bolster height and bolstered corners.
Throughout, the XLS has been dressed in smart new black fabric with red highlights.
VRX delivers VIP treatment
Those opting for the VRX can enjoy the added luxury of soft, black leather upholstery, with passengers able to kick back and watch the world go by through the panoramic glass roof. The overhead view can easily be hidden away at the flick of a switch behind the electronic blind, and there’s even mood LED lighting for evening drives.
The VRX benefits from further additions for driver safety, comfort – and pride. An auto-dimming rearview mirror reduces glare for night-time driving, reverse sensors provide added assurance when backing towards stationary objects, and aluminium pedal covers add a touch of class.
For those who enjoy a carefree approach to life, keyless entry and a one touch start system does away with annoying pocket fumbling – owners can simply jump in, wind down the windows and enjoy the ride!
Common sense and plenty of attitude
All models feature an integrated system of active and passive safety features that add up to peace of mind and a five-star ANCAP safety rating (as tested on 2WD models).
Features include seven airbags (driver, driver’s knee, passenger, side and curtain), Hill Start Assist, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Active Traction Control, Active Stability Control and Multi-mode Anti-lock Braking System.
SmartBrake is another innovative feature that comes as standard and is there ‘just in case’. If a driver unintentionally hits the accelerator as well as the brake in an emergency, SmartBrake registers that an error has been made and puts full focus on the braking system.
4WD models also feature 4WD Auto, which adjusts the vehicle’s traction system to suit road conditions, improving grip and enabling smoother turning. 4WD can also be locked for maximum traction in the stickiest of situations.
2WD XLS and VRX models come with a 2.0 L DOHC MIVEC petrol engine coupled with six-speed CVT INVECS III belt-driven transmission, delivering excellent fuel efficiency of 7.4L/100km.
4WD models feature a 2.3L intercooled turbo diesel that produces a huge 366Nm and a punchy 112kW. The six-speed automatic is designed to make the most of all that torque by matching the gears perfectly for optimum performance – delivering impressive economy of 6.0L per 100km.
The diesel option also has superior grunt when it comes to towing capacity – 1,400kg braked and 750kg unbraked, versus 1,300kg and 750kg on petrol models.
